Introducing Crazy Shortcake! This quilt is made using the same techniques in our book "Crazy Shortcut Quilts" (quilt as you go) and it uses One Layer Cake (a pre-cut stack of Forty 10" by 10" squares of complementary fabrics from the same line of fabric) and one yard of fabric for the sashing and binding. Isn't it precious? It was a big hit at Spring Quilt Market in Portland! This is my "Thank you" and bonus for buying our book ~ enjoy!
What's so wonderful about using a Layer Cake? The top and back squares are already cut and pressed - it's so nice! For these small squares, you can use leftover peices of batting if you want, or a piece that measures 36" x 45", cut into 10" squares.
Start by setting aside 20 of the Layer Cake Squares to use for the back of the the quilt. Following the cutting technique in the chapter called "Shortcuts" make the two cuts as you see them in the quilt above and be sure to follow all the tips we give on sewing and pressing. Try not to go exactly corner to corner. When your squares are cut and sewn, layer them with 10" x 10" pieces of batting and the backing squares that you set aside. Be sure to review the tips for layering if it's been a while since you made a Crazy Shortcut Quilt.
Add the decorative stitching and trim to 9" square.
Please be sure to use the cutting layout described in the book for cutting your sashing strips because on this quilt there is no room for change. The strips must be cut on the lengthwise grain as illustrated in the book, cutting first your binding strips (5 strips) and then 4 strips each of horizontal sashing (front and back sizes) and 15 strips each for the vertical sashing (front and back sizes). You'll only have a very small bit of fabric left.
Sash and bind and you are done! I made the quilt above in a weekend, doing a lot of other things besides quilting. If you have made even one of our quilts you can do this one in a weekend too! How nice is that? :)
